Spotted: A London startup says it is the first co-working space in the city where childcare can also be booked on a pay-as-you-go basis. Spaces at Cuckooz Nest can be reserved for as little as one hour and costs for a co-working desk plus the use of the crèche range from £14 – £20 an hour. Monthly memberships are also available.

The company was founded by friends and entrepreneurs Charlie Rosier and Fabienne O’Neill, who say that more than 1 in 7 London freelancers are working mums. Many of these women find it very difficult to organise flexible childcare, the company says.

“London has the worst maternal employment rate in the UK — if we improved this to meet the UK average, 80,000 more mothers could be in work if they want to be,” Rosier told the Evening Standard.

Takeaway: Freelance parents need childcare as much as any other working parents. In addition to convenience, Cuckooz Nest offers working parents the opportunity to work with others who are going through the same experience – a place where leaving a meeting to breastfeed or taking a break to read your child a story is seen as a normal part of the day. It may also relieve some of the loneliness that often accompanies new parents. Springwise has spotted several variations on the co-working space concept, from cheap spaces for Parisian students to space on a sailboat, but the Cuckooz Nest concept might be pointing the way towards more practical specialisation in co-working.
