Spotted: London-based design studio Bompas & Parr has created a completely plant-based hotel suite in London, reportedly a world first. The Hilton London Bankside suite, which runs around £500 a night, is entirely vegan, from bedding to mini-bar. The studio sought advice from UK’s Vegan Society to create a 100 percent vegan-friendly experience.

It starts at check-in where guests are ushered into a special area, which includes vegan-friendly furniture. Rooms are furnished with leather-like furniture, created with Pinatex, a natural textile made from pineapple leaf fibre. Pillows are stuffed with buckwheat or quinoa instead of feathers. The flooring is made from a sustainable type of bamboo. Even the paint and the cleaning supplies used in rooms are vegan, and of course guests can order from an all-vegan menu.

The room welcomed its first guests in January 2019.

Takeaway: Vegan hotels is actually a “thing”. There’s even a website devoted to Veggie Hotels. But how far hotels go to certify that everything from furnishings to food is vegan remains unclear. Hilton, at least, offers its seal of approval. And the trend is inspiring innovation in a wide-variety of sectors, from travel packages to footwear. Springwise has recently covered an e-commerce platform that offers sustainable fashion, a designer creating vegan leather from palm leaves and a new fibre made from coconut by-products.
