Emergency services are often under pressure with not enough resources. Innovations that can help alleviate the strain are therefore naturally valuable. Springwise has already spotted such devices as this integrated home system that warns of earthquakes and a multi-purpose bench that also functions as an emergency raft. Now a GPS-connected wristband can help the coastguard find those in danger in the sea.

Philippe Starck and her team at STARCK have developed a wristband that can transmit the user’s exact location on the beach or the sea to the rescue services in an emergency. Dubbed Dial, the wearable technology is waterproof, made of silicone. It has an in-built GPS tracker that enables the tracking of those in danger. The band can also adapt to fit the size of any wrist. Its lightweight design means that it can be worn everyday without the user noticing, ready to be used in any emergency.

The Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer (SNSM), the French voluntary coastguard organisation, commissioned the company to create this device. They were seeking a solution that could accurately track the location of an individual in danger in marine environments. In case of emergency, the user would activate the device and alert emergency services to their exact location and situation. It could also help to locate children on the beach who are lost from their parents. SNSM wanted to reduce the rescue time taken by the coastguard. They also sought to diminish the number of false alarms, wasting valuable time and resources of the emergency services.

Takeaway: With people pushing the boundaries of extreme sports further and further, technology to help keep those at risk is vital. Furthermore, integrating such a system into a small and lightweight device makes it easy to implement into daily life without disruption to the individual. What other means could there be to reduce the loss of life in dangerous situations?
