Modular hotel goes where the guests are

Imagine a hotel room that can follow businesses, festivals or sporting events almost anywhere in the world. French hotel group AccorHotels has developed the Flying Nest – a hotel that can travel. Designed by French designer Ora-ïto, the new hotel is made up of shipping containers clad in an eco-friendly wood. Each room is 12 square metres and includes a living area, private bathroom and large picture window. The rooms are connected by terraces designed to encourage socialising.

Accor has been road-testing the concept with prototypes in Clairefontaine, where France’s national football team trains; at the Le Mans 24-hour race; and at the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival, where it was placed on a temporary beach with a DJ, bar and food trucks. Now, the hotel has moved 1,800 metres up a mountain, to the Avoriaz ski resort in the French Alps. The location will allow guests to roll out of bed and onto the slopes.

Each module contains all the comforts of a standard hotel room, including luxury linens, air-conditioning and a Wi-Fi connection. The modules have also been designed with sustainability in mind, including the use of fair trade amenities, environmentally certified paint, wood cladding from environmentally-managed forests, LED lighting and the use of green energy and grey water recovery. Takeaway: According to Damien Perrot, AccorHotels’ Global SVP of Design Multibrand, the hotel has been designed to, “provide guests with a totally immersive accommodation option at the heart of the experience.” As such, the Flying Nest is another example of consumers’ increasing desire for unique experiences.
