Spotted: UK-based food and drinks startup Matcha Works has launched what it is calling the “world’s first SMS ordering system for food products”. Once customers register on the website, they can order products by sending a text message.
In order to demonstrate how the system works, Matcha Works also developed a text-to-try vending machine, which will debut at the London Food Tech Week on May 22. Users can text the vending machine, and it will then dispense their choice of drink.
“We think this technology could really disrupt the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) landscape and become the new way we all order food, drinks and other consumer products online,” said Harvey Hodd, the company’s co-founder.
Matcha Works manufactures healthy food and drink products made using matcha – a green tea leaf from Japan that is high in caffeine. The leaf is dried and ground to a fine powder before being incorporated into a variety of food and drink. The company hopes to expand into the US in the next year.
Takeaway: Springwise has been spotting recent innovations in the food and beverage sector that are emphasising personalisation and flexibility. These include drone-delivered coffee and a connected glass that lets bar customers order with a swipe. The Matcha Works model appears to be the first of its kind to incorporate SMS into the ordering process. In addition to disrupting the consumer-packaged goods industry, Matcha Works hopes it can license its SMS tech and vending machine to other food brands.
