Spotted: A company based in Australia is offering virtual memberships to entrepreneurs and startups to its co-working office hub. Fishburners has actual co-working offices in Sydney, Brisbane and Shanghai. But for $29 a month, entrepreneurs can access a virtual programme. This lets them connect online with a co-working community, receive a newsletter, gain access to lectures and events, and (for premium members who pay $20 a month more) use Fishburners’ physical co-working spaces once a month.

The idea is to support startups in more remote areas by giving them access to a larger networking community. Of the 100 startups that purchased a virtual membership during a pilot programme, about half lived in suburbs and 35 percent were in rural communities.

Takeaway: Fishburners’ virtual programme is tapping into growing demand for co-working facilities and services. Over the past ten years, co-working has gone from a niche service for city professionals to a world-wide trend with more than 3,000 locations. Rapid growth is predicted over the next few years. Whether virtual co-working spaces will be a significant part of this growth remains to be seen. It is also questionable how much benefit customers derive from co-working space that isn’t offering space more than a day a month. Springwise has reported on other efforts to modify co-working to meet the needs of freelancers, including an all-female workspace in Brazil, a night cafe in Manila that doubles as a workspace, and GigRove, which helps digital nomads find remote jobs and rent working space.
