Spotted: UK-based fintech ANNA has launched a bank card that miaows when you make a contactless payment. London design agency PSK came up with the design. Some three hundred cats auditioned for the role. In the end, the designers chose a cat named Pickles. The miaow, according to the company, serves as a reminder to think carefully about spending. The card itself is silent, but an associated app notification miaows.

ANNA says the fun design caters to its target audience – creative freelancers and small business owners. It also reflects ANNA’s mission to make banking and financial services seem less threatening.

Takeaway: The miaowing bank card is the latest gimmick in a market crowded with clever bank card features from bright, coral pink cards to ones designed vertically. Fintechs like ANNA are trying to stand out and attract small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In the UK, SMEs are a growing market worth £1.9 trillion, according to a 2018 report by EY. More fintech innovations tailored for the sector are on the horizon, including service-minded companies like ANNA, and also lending and cash flow management businesses. EY notes that more than 50 institutions have received a banking license in the UK since 2008, with many focused on the SME banking market.
